I earned a liberal arts degree in 1985 from the University of Maryland, European Division while in the USAF in Germany. At that time, the paralegal program had just started to evolve and I took as many classes as possible in that area of study before heading back to the United States at the end of my tour. Between 1985 and 1990, I worked in law firms as a legal secretary in Greenbelt, Maryland, and Cleveland, Ohio, before heading west to Las Vegas, Nevada, to work for a HMO insurance company handling physician and facility contracts. In mid-1990, I returned home to Vermont and worked in a law firm in Hinesburg and then a construction company in Middlebury. In 1995, I became employed at Green Mountain Power where I am still employed today. At that time, I returned to Champlain College to take the six remaining paralegal classes required to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies, graduating in 1998. As a corporate paralegal, I work in a number of different areas including real estate, insurance coverage and claims, litigation, the state and federal regulatory arena, contracts, financing and mortgage indenture requirements, preparing a budget, etc.
Our Legislative Committee tracks the status of bills during the legislative session, and informs members of proposed changes and enactments of new laws relevant to our profession.
